Our priority for this and next week is to create a smooth, comprehensible layout animatic. We received some great feedback during out last production pass that it really isn't too readable, so we're aiming to fix that.

The way my process works best for editing and layout is by creating a pieced-together version of an animatic with shots sourced from live action film. I like to reference from the masters, match the cuts I want, and rearrange to our story.

One of my greatest inspirations is Gobelins, so I scoured some of my favorite shorts of theirs and found Colza (2020). This is such a beautiful piece with vast, roaming fields and a great source for creating wide shots with the same content.

The use of camera to establish the space and relationship of the environment to the character is smooth and straightforward.

Another great source of my inspiration is the final boss fight in Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). Our short has something similar where it's important to emphasize the size difference between the main character and the giant bird. Cutting between the streaking bird and dramatic close-ups of the girl's expressions is going to be key for this battle.

We decided as a group to focus on the main fight scene as a starting point for this short. Since this is the most complicated section of this film, after completing this, everything else can be added easily afterwards. We are going to build this sequence in its entirety, and then with our flushed out animatic, add story elements to build the narrative. I felt that this was a smart direction for our team to establish focus and goal-setting strategies.

This way, the overall look development is established, as well as all our assets. This sequence includes all the major elements of our short: the mustard fields, the flock of kites, the main character, the main villain, and the village. This technique is also a great way of working linearly on a shot first, and then creating the rest of the short afterwards.

Here are other sources helpful in our conversations while creating our updated animatic:
