Creating more detailed illustrated beats was our group's goal for this week. Starting off with beat sheets for each story, they evolved into sketches of the major/minor beats, and finally turned into colored and illustrated panels.

Since these stories are planned for turning into 2-3 minute animated shorts, the scripts for each act dictate much of the visual storytelling that will take place.

Being able to visualize the beats in storyboard-like panels was a game changer. This way, I was finally able to see where the story needed severe structural changes.

We repeated this process for the sculpting story as well.

From the written beat sheet to the loose sketches, it was evident that the beginning of the narrative needed some work. Setting up the track for the entire film needed honing.

Of course, there were differences in opinion on what some of the settings would look like. Time period came into play for this short especially. What era does this take place in? What kind of sculpting tools will the artist use? Is this the 1890s or the 1990s?

After the base beat illustrations were created, we needed to set up our next set of goals. Act 2 & 3 needed to be completed. Character and environment concept art is the next step and meeting Friday, sharing ideas, and ironing some of these aspects will push us forward.
